Spring Cleaning Tips – March 2020
The winter months are finally behind us! It’s time to dust off the pollen and take a look at the home improvement and home maintenance that we have all put off during the winter months. When thinking about spring cleaning, the first question usually is “Where do I start?”
Roof – Start from the top! In most cases, if there is any water getting into the home, the roof is usually the source. If you are able, get on your roof and see if there are any missing or curling shingles. Also check for moss or extreme wear and tear on shingles. If you are unable to get on your roof, schedule an appointment with a roofing contractor. Keeping your roof in good condition is especially important going into the summer.
Trees & Shrubs – Closely inspect any trees that look diseased or discolored. This could be the sign of a dead tree. Also remove any branches that look to be unhealthy and pose a threat to your property.
Gutters – Clean gutters can do wonders for your roof and the siding of your house. Gutters help keep the rain off of your house therefore protecting the wood from rotting. Check gutters for excess debris, especially if your property has trees around it.
Painting – Peeling paint exposes the wood on the exterior of your home, which opens the door for all kinds of maintenance issues. Spring is a great time to do any painting that might need to be done to your home’s exterior.
Windows – Be sure to check your windows and window frames for any damage that may have accrued. Windows condensate in the winter due to the temperature difference between inside and outside your home. This condensation can seep down into the window frame and soften the wood around the window. Additionally, take a look at the caulking around your windows to be sure no water can get in. Most importantly – if your windows are in good shape, you can save money on your electricity bills in those hot summer months!
Railings & Decks – Take a close look at the condition of any decks or railings on your property. If you have railings, make sure they are securely fastened to the base. Also take time to inspect decks or porches. Make sure all the nails are in place and boards are in good condition.
Play Equipment – Make sure your child’s play equipment is in good condition. Warm weather means children and their friends will be looking to play outside. They will appreciate a safe environment to play in. Not to mention, your homeowners insurance carrier will also appreciate it!
Boats – It’s finally time to get the boat back in the water! Make sure your ship sails smooth all summer long by cleaning the fiberglass, both inside and outside, and having the motor serviced by a mechanic. Just a little bit of elbow grease will save you a whole lot of trouble later in the summer.
HVAC – If you have central heating and air, it’s probably a good idea to get your system serviced for the spring and summer. We all know hot and humid Eastern NC summers can be – help your HVAC out with a quick service call from a licensed contractor.
Chimney – Whether you use your chimney every day or once in a blue moon, it’s probably a good idea to get your chimney swept and inspected as we head into the spring months. Often animals such as squirrels and birds take refuge in chimneys.
Smoke Alarms – As seasons change, it’s always important to test your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors. Change batteries and replace units as needed.
